Windows Printer Driver locations after clicking Windows Update

Recommended Posts

Ok I know that windows 7 store all drivers in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\

However, when adding a new printer and clicking the windows update button more printers show up, but then when I check in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\ they are not there. So where does windows actually store these new drivers?

Thanks in advance for your help.

That is just a dialogue box in case you do not have the drivers for your printer, Just select from the list and it will then automatically go online and find and install the right drivers.

But if you have a CD with the drivers on use that. What make of printer is it?.

Oh right, so it really only downloads a list at first. Well it's not really a specific driver I am looking for. I am installing new Win 7 pcs in hospital admin departments and a lot of their printers are pretty old so everytime I need to wait for the list to show and then download the driver and install. Basically it would be much handier if I could save all those legacy windows 7 compatible drivers onto a USB stick and not have to download drivers every-time.

Ok I figured it out. When you install a new driver from the windows update list, say the ancient "HP Laserjet 6p" model, Windows will download a package of HP drivers and place them in "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\" in a folder called something like "prnhp001.inf_x86_neutral_cacb8bcaef076d27". This package for example is a quite substantial 66 mbs.

So all I need to do is copy this folder onto a USB stick and in the future refer to it for old HP x86 Windows 7 drivers.

It is also the case that manufacturers often don't produce drivers for obsolete hardware on modern Windows versions. This was particularly so in the FAT to NTFS changeover at the time of Windows XP.
