Windows 8.1 Problem With External Drives

Ever since going from Win 7 to Win 8.1,

The computer can no longer recognise external drives.

It also seems to kill the drives as a result.

Only by reinstalling Win 7 can I get the drives to work again an somehow restore the files on the drive.

I have tried on win 8.1 to uninstall and reinstall the USB controller drivers, update the motherboard software but still it does not work.

Can anyone suggest a fix?

I am installing a clean, full Win 8.1 version on a formatted HDD.

Never had a problem with XP/Vitsa/7 ever.

Only happens with 8.1.

I have a similar problem.

Non of my devices (printers and Monitor) are being picked up by windows 8.1. Was ok in windows 8. The printer driver is part of the W8.1 OS and the old driver cannot be deleted?

Word and Excel can see the printers and is functional , the monitor is currently a paper weight!

Any advice?
