Installation of W7 64 bit with UPGRADE disk on Win XP 64 bit.

Hello

From what I have read Windows XP cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 without wiping the disk and therefore required files should be backed up first and that Windows 7 upgrade is in fact a CLEAN install.

If the hard drive is wiped I imagine that it is formatted therefore is it possible (like it used to be in previous Windows versions) to use a Windows 7 UPGRADE disk on a freshly formatted hard drive (eg a brand new drive) and during the installation the user prompted to insert the installation disk for Windows XP (which verifies that the user does in fact OWN Windows XP?

Thanks

Thanks for the link.

I read all pages but still cannot determine if a Windows 7 UPGRADE disk can be used to install Windows 7 on a blank (formatted) disk.

I remember this could be down with earlier verions of Windows and during the installation you would be prompted to insert the installation disk for the old version of Windows you want to upgrade from.

Does this also work for a Windows 7 Upgrade installation?

I have just down that myself. Had to have XP OS on it before could use upgrade Windows 7 Premium - and that worked.
