VGA output not working

I am trying to hook my compaq Presario CQ60 laptop to my TV to watch some streaming movies. I can't get a signal from the PC to the TV. I right click on the desktop and then to screen resolution after having everything connected but the VGA connection is not recognized. I have no idea what I am missing here. Any help would be appreciated.

You normally (with a laptop) need to press one of the Function Keys to switch from the normal screen to another monitor.

Look at your Function Key row (F1, F2 etc) and somewhere on there (probably F4 ?) you should find an icon that looks like a hollow square, or a hollow square, a slash, and a filled square. Hold down your Fn key, and press this key. It should find the monitor right away.

Pressing the key again will take you back to the default screen.
