The reason behind Windows XP's Service Pack 2 delay for the first half of 2004 is said to be the inclusion of a set of new security features, code-named 'Springboard'.

Springboard is said to include the following security enhancements:

An updated version of the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), which will include outbound scanning capabilities and other features previously found only in ISA Server. ICF will be enabled by default

A new version of Windows Update software

Memory management code for defeating common buffer overrun attacks

Springboard technologies will also be made available to Windows Server 2003 customers via the first service pack for that OS, Microsoft says.
