AlanHo
I can’t vouch for the validity of this – but I read a post on another forum that said someone had their bank account virtually emptied after they paid a taxi driver with their debit card. They wanted to pay with a credit card but the driver asked for another method because he didn't want to pay the visa fee. On reporting it to the Police they received the following advice :- Whenever you are asked to use a debit instead of a credit card, for whatever reason, first fully enter the wrong PIN number. If it is a counterfeit machine it will not know the PIN is incorrect, pseudo process the payment and produce a receipt in ordered to obtain your card details. It will store your card number but store the wrong PIN number which makes it useless to the fraudster who will not know until later when he tries to use the information to skim your bank account. The fraudster will have noted the security number on the back of the card and will think he has gathered enough information to go on a buying spree. An authentic machine will reject the PIN and request a "try again" of some sort.

andsome
Just had further thoughts on this. If you have put the card into a machine, which a taxi driver will have passed over to you, and entered your PIN, he will not be able to see the three numbers on the back. These are only used on transactions where the card holder is not present. When purchasing from a website, anyone with a modicome of common sense will have checked that it is an https site. AlanHo
9 times out of 10 the seller picks up the machine - holds his hand out for the card, you hand it over and he slips it into the machine then enters the amount and hands it to you to enter your pin. You then hand back the machine with your cars still in it - when it prints out the receipt, the seller rips it off, pulls the card out and hands both to you. I did exactly that at our butchers this morning.
andsome
BUT, if he had turned it over to look at the three numbers, you would have been fully justified in shooting him.
