doug Posted November 8, 2003 Report Share Posted November 8, 2003 Having found which of my soft- and hardware require XP updates, I have decided to opt for the dual boot option because my Black Widow scanner cannot be supported. For the rest, if I download the XP drivers how should I install them. Now, with my present 98 system then create an extra partition for XP when I install it, i.e. will my present system work with the new drivers, or should I only load them after installing and running XP on the new partition? I'll be using partition Magic 5.01 to create the extra partition.My HDD set up is C: 3.26G used with E: 16.5G used with 39.3G free. The second HD D & F are setup in a similar way. doug Posted November 8, 2003 Author Report Share Posted November 8, 2003 Starting to look a bit dodgy. The only one mentioned for my model is for Win95b. There are a couple of drivers for Opticpro 4830p one for Mustek and another for Plustek. How can I find if they're compatible before I commit? I will go for dual boot just in case I have a problem with the scanner, don't want to lose it just yet - having to scrape a few pennies for domestic purposes. Everything else should be OK. Am progressively downloading all the upgrades I need to a separate folder on my other HD. When I've done that I'll then have to update all my backups etc. Then read up on how to go about this dual-boot malarkey. :PPS anyone have any comments/advise on partitioning for dual-booting for XP and the size to go for given my present setup? For those that dont self install, you should load SP1 first and then all outstanding drivers. Graphics card and chipset drivers should ALWAYS be updated to the latest versions. The main one is 80 GB and the second only 40 GB. The main one is partitioned as [email protected] GB with [email protected] GB. The second disk is 10 & 27 GB. I'm thinking of doing a complete back-up of the C drive to the second disk (which I do from time to time have bought that Tee shirt). Copying the second part of the drive over to CD's as well as add book etc if I can still located the links. Install XP - should I format the drive first? Then see how I get on. If it's a no no with the scanner then I can re-format, re-install 98 and un-back. Then I'll go for the dual boot. Sounds OK? :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest Grim Reaper Posted November 8, 2003 Report Share Posted November 8, 2003 once you have formatted and wiped out all trace of 98, it is not as simple as reformatting to dual boot, you need a win98 floppy startup disk in order to use fdisk to repartition the drive.
