Guest nellie2 Posted November 9, 2003 Report Share Posted November 9, 2003 This is interesting:-More than four in five (86 per cent) of British computer users get irritated and stressed by PC problems, according to a survey commissioned by security firm Symantec. Only 14 per cent of those quizzed had the Zen-like calm to say problems with their PCs never irritate them. The survey of 500 UK adults, conducted by Ipsos Research, came up with five irritants most likely to make a user’s blood boil. In order of annoyance these were: slow performance and system crashes (cited as worst irritant by 23 per cent of those quizzed); "spam, scams and too much email" (20 per cent); pop up advertisements (15 per cent); viruses (14 per cent) and files getting lost or deleted (four per cent). And just as different PC pests annoy people in different ways, so our reactions vary from mild annoyance to extreme anger. According to the survey, 39 per cent of us are likely to have an extreme reaction to computer-induced stress, including "swearing, shouting and even violence". Pressing random keys out of sheer frustration "in an attempt to make something happen" is also a popular response to problems. And while 40 per cent of us will go for the pragmatic approach - looking to resolve a problem ourselves or seeking help from others - almost one in five of us will eventually give up on their machines when problems arise. A quarter of respondents admitted that computers failed to make their lives easier and said they are "not worth the hassle". Furthermore, a third of the respondents are suffering from "PC paranoia", admitting that they sometimes feel as though their computers are “getting the better of them".scourceI have recently been having a few PC problems and I must admit my stress levels have been rather high, but only after every possible logical avenue had been explored and still the rotten thing wouldn't play ball.. talk about bashing your head against a brick wall!!I'll bet there are a few of you who fix PC's for other people who can come up with a few good stories!! :) CUSTOMER: "Your computer's sound card is defective and I ant a new one."TECH SUPPORT: "What seems to be the problem?"CUSTOMER: "The balance is backwards. I will always try the beta versions or mess about with the config safe in the knowledge that a reformat is simple enough to implement.After all it is simply a PC, not a matter of life and death!! -pops- Posted November 9, 2003 Report Share Posted November 9, 2003 I compute in the knowledge that I have full system backups one week and two week old, max. I also have file and data backups one day, two days and three days old, max. These are each on physically different drives to my main "C" drive so if things do go A over E, I am calm enough to recover almost all of my system within a few minutes. Well, a few tens of minutes.The other things listed like spam and such like are minor irritations and I am old enough and wise enough not to be unduly bothered by such trivialities. It only takes one near death experience to put things in perspective. I have stuff backed up....thank goodness.... configuration and software problems I can deal with.... hardware problems I can deal with... I have a good support system here if anything is too much for me as well.What was getting to me was having to reformat and reload windows more or less every other day for the past two months or so.... exploring every avenue of troubleshooting available and still getting no-where..... ambigious error messages....etc etc. All this was down to a duff motherboard... but even that wasn't obvious!!!! :( Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I managed to control myself that much but it still got a boot!!!! :(i once kicked the photocopier at work.....funnily enough it stopped playing up after that!!!and i did throw my Time PC across the floor once........it didnt work in the first place so it couldnt be made any worse......i have since learnt how to build and use a pc and never again will i buy Time.......and i have mellowed a touch too!! A lot less goes wrong with this machine, touch wood, than did with my old one running 98SE.
