-pops- Posted November 24, 2003 Report Share Posted November 24, 2003 I know this is not what you've asked but, assuming it's a 56K dial up modem you want, I would always opt for an external device either to plug into a USB or serial port.The reason for my external preference is that it would likely have a combination of lights on the front which flash according to what the modem is doing. By learning what the various flashes and lighting cominations mean, it gives a good indication that the device and the system (yours and the ISP) is working correctly and if it isn't, may give you an idea what is wrong and where.My personal preference for modems is either a Creative ModemBlaster or, the one I still use, even though I'm on Broadband, is an Olitec Fax Voice modem. Obviously I don't use the modem part of the Olitec any more but find it excellent for its Fax facility which remains operative even though the computer may be switched off - it has its own memory card for Fax and voice. Adwanoc Posted December 1, 2003 Report Share Posted December 1, 2003 Internal modems are great. Before I had Cable internet, I had a resilliant little 56k internal modem. I have used external modems in the past and I don't think the little flashing lights are going to make much of a difference when your modem is fried.
