-pops-
While I was passing the time this morning waiting for the forum to be repaired, I clicked on a few spam messages that Mailwasher had trapped for me just to see what they contained.Apart from the usual porn, appendage extensions (if I took all of those offers up I would be able to encircle the world several times), Viagra (if I took those offers up, my appendage would project far enough to reach the moon), codeine, Valium, Vicodin and so on there were a number of messages that contained either a random set of words, mainly nouns, which made no sense at all or a random set of a random selection of letters which made even less sense. The thing that mystifies me is why? There can be no possible point in sending these senseless emails. They aren't selling anything or even giving it away or is there more to them? If I opened them fully, would there be more than Mailwasher is allowing me to see whilst still on the server? I'm not brave enough to open one in all its glory but I would be interested in knowing what the raison d'être of these things is. Anybody know? -pops-
I was wondering if anyone was aware of an explanation from a spam manufacturer as to why they bother. Not only is it a potential waste of my time it most certainly is a waste of theirs.
Guest Grim Reaper
I was wondering if anyone was aware of an explanation from a spam manufacturer as to why they bother. Not only is it a potential waste of my time it most certainly is a waste of theirs.probably because there are still some very gullible people out there that believe the trash that they peddle. It may well be a waste of time sending it to the seasoned net user but there are plenty of less well educated people out there! -pops-
probably because there are still some very gullible people out there that believe the trash that they peddle. What I was meaning specifically were the ones with garbled content which make no sense at all - either words selected at random or groups of jumbled letters which make even less sense.fvhnaxaplf oowqqd lzipaaxbs owwqyx wtqjl tpwmmqck uukislbsn lzatnekdj ibpor gzwkjh rabuuuze wbcwsbivn bhlorlacbs ssbkdclgj jkoojdrdwbfcthbral uzxbuo vqapdbpz kzgxze oqyzndziu vpynyyt hcjibscuyz jiorpfg lrmijaze qymqtxjkt llngr xrvacves hbqwhgbwlv cgykta jingf ztzdyts xjzxqjrhmn iwspf knguihbr pvlzhknThe above is a genuine one I just picked up from Mailwasher. If it's some sort of code, again, why?
-pops-
An illustration of a slightly less garbled message is entitled "knockdown fancy haploidy indiana moscow" and contains the message "heterosexual octoroon chaucer french ontogeny diagrammatic missouri digging lottery dropout excision carven dyeing impel cretin halve inexplainable inclement rerouted giuliano bed contrast octavia evince anonymous"There is nothing more, no indication of anything that I might buy, nothing. Guest nellie2
Do you think someone might have the wrong translator there???? I'm wondering if these are just automated mails that are sent out and the software has had a bit of a hiccup... sending you a load of gobbledegook instead of tempting offers for self enhancement etc! It is just a guess though!
andsome
An explanation that I heard was that if only 0.1% of spam is responded to by an actual purchase then there is a profit. I heard that one spammer can auto send out a billion messages per day, how true this is I don't know.
-pops-
An explanation that I heard was that if only 0.1% of spam is responded to by an actual purchase then there is a profit. I heard that one spammer can auto send out a billion messages per day, how true this is I don't know.Yes but, why does gobbledegook inspire anyone to respond to it?I've found out that this total rubbish spam - unreadable, meaningless, pointless stuff such as I am describing is becoming quite common. I though it may have been just me receiving it at one time.As far as I can make out, this stuff is just a complete waste of Internet space - it isn't selling anything, doesn't appear to have attachments containing nasties, nothing and I was wondering if anyone had seen any explanation on The Enquirer, The Register or a similar publication as to why the spam-mongers are doing this.Or could it be testing the theory of the infinite number of monkeys on an infinite number of typewriters producing the winning numbers to all future versions of the Readers Digest Prize Draw (which, I note, is raising its very ugly head again)
