The M6 toll has recently been opened near to where I live. There has been a lot of controversy since then about the road signs. Many of the old signs have been removed and people are now directed to the toll road. An instance is on the A446, heading north, just a hundred yards or so short of the A5, a sign points to the left, saying 'Burntwood M6 toll', and yet the distance from here to Burntwood is about four or five miles, meaning that people would be duped into paying the full toll fee for a journey which has direct access along the A5 for free. Another instance is where people are directed to cross the A5 and proceed along the toll road for about 4 miles to Lichfield, when in fact a right turn onto the A5 would save the toll fee. There are MANY instances of this along the route, with people who do not know the area being directed to very short journeys along the toll road, when the journey can be completed in minutes along the normal A class roads. Cheesy Blair's government has allowed this to happen despite local protests. The moral is that if you are visiting the Midlands, then study the road atlas first, and IGNORE any signs pointing you to the M6 toll. The OBVIOUS answer which has been totally ignored, is for the signs to offer BOTH choices, toll or A road.
