-pops- Posted January 12, 2004 Report Share Posted January 12, 2004 Talking with my granddaughter (9) yesterday, she asked "What if all the water drained off the world like somebody left the tap running and it all went into space?"I know this can't happen and tried to explain to her some reasons (gravity and all that) but, it set me wondering: "Has anyone produced a model (globe) of the earth with all the water removed? That is, showing all the depths of the oceans in relief.It certainly wouldn't be the sphere we're used to and would most likely be different to any other known celestial body.Does any WF member know of such an article/model/website? -pops- Posted January 12, 2004 Author Report Share Posted January 12, 2004 No, I haven't made myself clear.What I'm interested in is a model of the Earth without its covering of water (and ice caps) - showing the deep ocean chasms and canyons that are known to exist.Mars is substantially spherical as the Earth is with its water coat but the Earth would be far from that without that coat. They supplied a map of all the world's ocean floors showing the mountains, trenches and active volcanic areas which are producing new crust which is still pushing the continents apart. Some of the mountains are higher than Everest and the deepest trench, the Marianus, is over four miles deep. All I want is to have a look at relief maps or, preferably a 3D model, and see how the Earth at this time varies away from being a sphere. It is only for interest (mine and my granddaughters - both of them as the younger one asked me about it this morning as well)I will most certainly look at the info from moon. Moon OU course book's rock...... short concise and give you the meat when you need it .....I got through Geochem, Crystalography and Geophysics, second and third year on the back of them....( the required reading was very nobby) and considering I'm a mathematical retard and spent most of my student years in a haze ...Quite surprised ....
