another Media player

Recommended Posts

VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

It is open source and plays just about anything..... wow!!!!

Get it here

Thanks for being so helpful Nell, but I think I'll just stick at present with Windows Media Player, Real Player, Quick Time Player, Asus DVD Player, and Creative Play centre. I may have more than I can't think of at the moment.

Carrying on from andsome's reply, why are so many pieces of almost identical software produced? There are innumerable multimedia players, DVD players, picture viewers and so on. A look in TuCows for almost any type of software will come up with possibly hundreds of choices - each differing from the other in some miniscule detail but in the end, doing almost exactly the same thing.

Thanks, nellie2, for bringing these things to the forum's attention but is this thing any different or better than the others?

My own thoughts are that these things are generated by some bored geek, who is not clever enough to create something original, looking into source codes (perhaps proprietary ones) doing a small mod and then passing on the mod as a new "revolutionary" program.

Could be worse, though. The geek could be creating viruses and other nasties :(

Well the difference is that it is open source... so if you like to play around with programming or feel you can add to it then it is perfectly ok to do so. I must admit that I tend to stick with what I am happy with, but others like to try new things and if it is free and safe then why not I say!!! :)
