AlanHo
Has anyone an explanation and cure for my computer suddenly throwing up the attached error message and then shutting down.Sorry about the quality of the image - but I cannot take a screen shot because the computer is frozen when the message appears - hence the digital camera photo. This problem hits me at random times - roughly every hour or two - and has started after a fresh format of my hard disc and a reinstall of Windows XP and all my software. I have tried a repair of Windows XP - but to no avail.
Guest ellas
you could have the blaster worm try running this http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...moval.tool.html just to make sure you have not got it.
Boris
Not an explanation - but what firewall are you using ?My recent XP Pro similar shutting down problems seem to have stopped completely once I uninstalled Outpost , flushed it out of the registry with jv16 power tools and then installed the latest version of Zone Alarm (free). I was getting 3 or 4 crashes a day - but none since Monday when I did the change.Have you got any 64k files in C:\Windows\Minidump ?Anything in Event Viewer after you've rebooted ? nellie2
I think Ellas is right.. especially with it being a new install of xp... blaster will most likely have got in before you managed to download your updates.
AlanHo
Thanks for the various ideas. I tried the anti virus check and it flashed a message saying that it had removed Blaster M - but confused me by stating the file could not be cleared.I ran the check a second time and all was clear and I have not had the original problem returnThanks for your efforts. As an aside I came upon a Microsoft link I found really useful - it checks your computer set up to ensure you are best protected against nasties. Using this site should be made compulsory for computer ignoramusi like me - it found that my XP firewall was not set up and did it for me automatically. Try Microsoft Computer Set Up Check
