How To Stay Updated:

By selecting the Update Manager tab in AVG Control Center and clicking on the Update Now! button, AVG 6.0 will download the appropriate update file and will perform the update for your AVG system.

Alternativley, you can download the updates manually from here

Doing a Scan:

Always update first.

1. Open AVG Anti-Virus

2. Click "Complete Test"

3. Let it run. :D

Interpreting the results:

AVG will notify you if there is a virus detected. We recomend first trying to move the virus to the 'Virus Vault', and if that does not work, Delete the file. You may need to do this in Safe Mode.

Decision on exceptions:

If for some reason, you cannot remove the virus. You can try to clean it, but the 'Virus Vault' or deleting it is best.

Configuration Tips:

Always do a FULL SCAN. It may take longer, but a virus can hide itself anywhere, and your reading this because you want to be secure.

Windows Forum Says...

This is a great Anti-Virus program I use it myself (Scarecrow Man). AVG Also offers a paid version from here.

* Please note, may NOT be most current version. If a newer version is available, please notify a Moderator.

Extra Credit to Powerless

May I request that regular contributors to this column delete their old posts here once they are no longer current.

An out of date update notification is not of any value :)

And it saves us poor Mods - housekeeping chores too ! Boris

I was trying to update my anti-virus on a computer with no ethernet card, and I noticed this could be quite difficult since there is no dial-up connection here.

So I looked around for a manual update.

How to Manually Update AVG

Note from kodl - AVG Team member: Manual update is generally not recommended as it requires that you download the big full-update file. We strongly recommend to use the automatic update if at all possible as it downloads only the differential update file that is typically rather small (1/10th or less of the full update).

If you need to perform a manual update first you will need to get the latest update files from the AVG Free website at the AVG Free Update Files.

The Priority updates contain the full virus database.

The Recommended updates include the database and new program updates.

The Optional updates include those plus additional files that may be of help.

Choose the one that applies to your system, if in doubt, get the recommended or the optional update file and download the file to a directory on your computer that you can find later. You must remember where this is because you will have to tell AVG where to find these files later.

After you have the files,

1. Verify and update your computer's time and date, AVG uses this info to determine if you have the correct files.

2. Open the Control Center,

3. Double Click on the Update Manager or select it then press the Properties button at the bottom of the screen.

4. On the Properties screen unselect the option labeled "Do not ask for the update source", click Apply and Ok.

5. Now click the Update button on the bottom of the screen.

6. In the pop-up window, click the Folder button.

7. Navigate to the folder where you had downloaded the update files into and click Ok.

8. AVG will update now with the file you had selected unless it contains the same as you already had.

That should be all you need to have updated your system.

 Just a question about AVG features. I got burned by AVASt, cause it seemd to be very customizable. But that AV only allows to exclude up to 3 or 5 apps from the resident scanner. What about the same feature (resident protection) in AVG?

Any experiences worth to tell? :flowers:
