recovery console experts.

Recommended Posts

A friend was in the process of using Bootvis this morning when he suffered a power cut.

On reboot, an error message before windows screen, system32 is missing or corrupted. you can try to repair using recovery console.

No go wants a password, none ever set.

I've downloaded the floppies, tested on my system, no request for a password now.

??? Can I use SFC /scannow from the recovery console, will it rebuild the sys 32 files ?

I had that same message a couple of times, once in similar circumstances - powercut in the middle of booting.

Whatever I did - repair, rcovery console, uncle Tom Cobbley, nothing worked. Far easier, perhaps the only practical way, was to reinstall from the full backup.

I hope your friend has a backup.

Despite my harping on about it in the past, no, "I have a recovery disk from HP"

I've tried last known good config etc.

Oh dear, I think I'm going to have some work to do. :(

First I think I'll have to see if I can recover anything., don't have anything to slave it to tho, just my laptop.

Anyone else any better hopes for me ?

You could bang your XP on as a parallel install ie: two installations and copy what you want then remove yours and reinstall with the recovery CD. Just had a look at the M$ KB site regarding the problem, it is over complicated and full of things you don't have to do.

Doing this

cd system32\con fig

ren system system.old

ren system.alt systemalt.old

copy c:\windows\repair\system

copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system

exit

Will rename the bad files and copy a good version back to Windows/system.

I bet you 10p it works.... ;)

I tried all options to find them Chris

A dir listing for C:\ showed no Windows\repair, System32 at 0 bytes, no system.alt.

Bunged my copy over the top, going to recover his documents etc tomorrow.

Then clear out and start from scratch with his recovery CD. A lesson learnt by him I think, he's asked how much for Pmagic and Drive Image.

I can now recover all his docs now, which I helped create !! :o , but after this if he doesn't spring for DI or Ghost he's on his own.

Had to activate XP straight away, I'm glad my system is imaged in case something goes wrong before I recover his system.

All good fun tho !! :P

I think the power failed when Bootvis was in "writing boot files to disk" stage.
