Boris Posted February 17, 2004 Report Share Posted February 17, 2004 One of my friends is 70+ and has a mini-tower PC circa 1998 - Win98, 4gig H/D, PC100 RAM. I've never seen a smaller one - its got a tiny Chieftec case with only 1x5.25" bay and 2x3.5" bays with a 150w mini PSU - you've got to take the PSU and 3.5" drive holder out to even see the RAM + cpu.He decided to replace the H/D with a bigger (20gig) one as he was always short of disk space. The new H/D was correctly added (as far as I can tell) with no problems, (I'd already formatted and jumpered it correctly for him) but it would just not re-boot. After much headscratching, I eventually found that in re-assembling the PC, he had somehow managed to plug his monitor in wrongly, bending some of the pins so that they were touching the metal part of the monitor lead. I managed to get the monitor working again by a bit of defy long-nosed pliers work inside the connector. I've completely disassembled and rebuilt the PC twice today - but it still won't boot. So the net result seems to be that there is a problem with his mobo - probably a short ? The graphics card works OK in another PC, as does his RAM, both of his H/Ds, PSU and modem. His Socket 370 Celeron 366 cpu also seems to be OK as far as I can tell (the fan works at least). I'm temporarily down to 1 PC at the moment so I've been told that I'm "not allowed" to try the board in this one - as a higher power :D needs it - not that I think it would work anyway !He doesn't want to buy a new machine because of the cost, and he definitely doesn't want a bigger case !. With this and the limitations of its non-standard PSU - I've told him that his options are "rather restricted".The upshot of all this rambling is - all the other bits seem to work - so does anyone else have an old spare Socket 370 Micro-ATX board which still works stored away in their attic/anywhere - and that they no longer need (at a "reasonable" price) ?
