Sir Radfordin Posted February 20, 2004 Report Share Posted February 20, 2004 Ok, have located a PIII 600mhz with 256mb RAM for £100 (hey you got a free dell mousemat!) so can now start some testing I've been planning to do for while.Installed WinXP Pro just for fun...not much difference to home but worth seeing how long it took (bout 30 mins if your interested)Then removed that and put Windows .NET Enterprise Server (2003) Evaluation Copy (365 Day Trial!) on. Had a play with that...got a virtual SMTP server working which is handy. Tested and found certain ISPs block mail sent using it because I've not got a fixed IP address.Now installed 30 day trial of Office 2003 Pro. Had a play and can't see any significan differences that would make me want to upgrade.So if you have any 2003 software and can suggest some of its big advantages then please let me know! It just has nicer colors and a few extras as far as I can tell...nothing fundamentally different (esp. for the SOHO user).When I'm fed up with this lot the box will get a Linux install (RedHat is waiting in the wings...!)Go on make it worth my while, I could've used the time to write my Diss! Also Front Page 2003 doesn't use server extensions any more and I like one note too.Plus with 2003 you can go to M$ on line and do the tutorials there which I have found useful if a bit condescending. Sir Radfordin Posted February 20, 2004 Author Report Share Posted February 20, 2004 Don't have FP2003 :( but have FP v3 installed for some very strange reason...wonder which days of previous versions of Windows that is left over in the XP code from!The layout of Office isn't THAT different from 2000 is it? Certinally not from XP anyway - it looks different as the colours are different and the side navigation bar is an XP feature.Just found "business contact manager" so lets have a look at that...! It has a godzillion of tools most of which no one will ever use. To an extent i'm sure some users might as well use Notepad. But of course as you say Office 2003 looks so much better...This is for the the whole package, FP, Excel, Viso, onenote, whilst they are very nice toys to play powerless just does not have a use for them.So if you have any 2003 software and can suggest some of its big advantages then please let me know! Sir Radfordin Posted February 21, 2004 Author Report Share Posted February 21, 2004 XP and 2003 seem to have 'sharing' or 'group work' options that may be used - though even when I was working didn't touch them at all!Think the bigger changes came from 2000 - XP (mail merge being one that I've found simpler to use)Think I'll save my cash once the trail is over!
