Viruses on friend's PC

Had many phone calls from my friend in London who is on dial-up. She has Kaspesky AV and it's up to date. It says she has the above viruses but won't do anything about them. At my suggestion she has run Pandasoft on-line. The found 3 viruses but said it could only disinfect 1 of them. Since then she has downloaded AVG 6-free, installed and run that. She has just told me that she has downloaded the AVG update again run the scan but no viruses detected. She still has Kaspesky on her system and can't uninstall it (she still has the original disk). I think she is getting a bit punch drunk now.

Question is Kaspesky telling the truth or is AVG missing the boat?

What is the next step?

PS she is running Win98

Doug if she has XP or ME then the virus's might be sitting in system restore and the av won't be able to get at them, I would advise her to disable system restore and then run an on line virus scan or use the tools that Powerless has suggested.

No she's running Win98 - remember that OS? Anyway I've asked her to register here and follow up on powerless's suggestions. Thought that would be easier than talking her through it all by 'phone and e-mail. If you see the name beetls show up do I get any forum points/
