Timely Warning

Hello All,

as some of you may know, I work as part of a support team for a college network. We pride ourselves on being good with our security relating to viruses and such, and during the past 12 months, have only discovered 3 infected machines in a network of nearly 1000, with over 7000 users.

Today however, one of the boys in the office made a classic error. He received an email "from" the guy sitting next to him, and duly ran the attachment.

Up popped Mshearts. "Why did you send this mail?" he asked. "I didn't" was the reply.

"Oh S :censored: :censored: :censored: ", or something like that was the next comment.

Now the av dats on his machine were less than 24 hours old, but it did not detect it (funnily enough there was already a new dat file which did), the mail had originated in Holland and just happened to spoof the address of the guy sitting next to the receiver in the office, and he had become complacent and simply ran an executable from his mailbox without checking first.

We manually update our servers daily for new av dats, and all client machines are set to automatically update from the network when they are logged on.

Fortunately this was spotted immediately, so it was unplugged from the network at once and duly cleaned before any damage was done.

My Point is this, no matter how good you think your av protection is, ALWAYS exercise caution when receiving emails with attachments on.

Regards. Mr. M.
