hi

i see in your post that some of you have this game.

i was given it for christmas last year and can't load it as i get this error.

2. Error Message "Couldn't Load Default.cfg":

If you try to run Return to Castle Wolfenstein and receive the error

message, "Couldn't Load default.cfg", the game is basically telling you

that it cannot find the \main directory that is part of Return To Castle

Wolfenstein. This error commonly occurs when the game is installed with no

directory specified. For example, if you choose to install it to a hard

drive or partition other than the C: drive (that is, D:,E:, etc.), but

fail to specify a folder, the game will install everything to the root of

the hard drive and the game will not launch.

If you want to install the game to a hard drive other than the default

setting (C:), please make sure you specify a folder when choosing the

other drive (i.e.: D:\RTCW).

as i am loading it on c drive as required i have not been able to sort it.

has anyone else had this problem or does anyone know a fix.

This could be interesting!! Right, first off, can you post back with the details about where the program is actually installed (ie C:\program files\castlexxx).

In the directory it is installed to, I would expect you to be able to find the default.cfg file (or at least a .cfg file), it should open in notepad, can you post the contents please.

Also, I assume you are trying to launch the game from a shortcut (either in your start menu, or on the desktop), what happens if you run the game direct from the executable in the install directory, and can you post the information found in the shortcut if you right click on it and select properties.

Hi pwp,

A couple of things first. I want to check whether you have added some typos. Under your typing for config file, is there actually a space between "rtcwgoty" and ".ini", and also in the next line after that is there actually a missing "[" before Main?

Also, I wish to check, is the data you have listed from default.cfg, or is it the contents of the .ini file? I am suspecting it is the .ini file.

I have had a bit of a search, and this seems to be a common problem. The only info I have found, which I would like you to try before we mess around editing your files, is to create a new blank "default.cfg" file and put in your main directory. All the info I have found is a bit vague, and not actually having the game myself I cannot check, but I cannot work out whether the file needs to go into "c:\program files\return to castle wolfenstein-game of the year edition" or if you have it, into "c:\program files\return to castle wolfenstein-game of the year edition\main".

If you already have a file called "default.cfg" then make a copy of it somewhere safe, and try replacing it with a blank one. If you don't have the file, then just create a blank one. All you need to do, is create a new blank text file, and rename it default.cfg

Try this and see what happens.

both my mistakes i'm afraid. :blush:

there is no default.cfg that i can find the ini was the only one that mentioned

cfg in the detail.

tried inserting empty folder as suggested and result was the same.

have looked on both discs and can't find a file called default.cfg either.

I hope this is another typo.

I asked you to create an empty file, not a folder. From the info I found, it seems to be resolved by creating the default.cfg yourself.

Easiest way to create a blank file such as you need, is to go to the directory where you want it, then right click on a blank section and select New > Text Document.

This will create a blank file called "New Text Document.txt", simply rename this to default.cfg

Windows will probably tell you that renaming it will cause it to not function properly, but rename it anyway.

If you cannot see the .txt extension after you create the initial file, you will need to turn off the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option in windows explorer.

Make a copy of it first and put somewhere for safe keeping.

If that makes no difference add the same data to the next line

See what happens.

Looks like it may be a bit of a pain with this game. But after uninstalling, I think you will need to manually remove some files and directories, as well as cleaning out a few registry entries in order to fully remove it.

You can then try installing afresh.
