Guest Blink_182_fan Posted April 5, 2004 Report Share Posted April 5, 2004 My bt broadband has been running very slow and when i started to download a file it went from the normal speed down to 12.1kbps and its decreasing very slowly and i dont know why. If I've understood correctly it's not how many people living near you but how many people are allowed to share your connection to your ISP. So if your ISP is using a contention ratio of 50-1 that is the maximum amount of people that should be allowed on your connection at any one time. Generally there are far less.Some ISP's will use this to their advantage and allow say, 60 or "more!" connections knowing full well that the odds of all 60 being on-line and downloading at the same time are quite small but it can happen and then your connection speed will really slow down.The better ISP's will stick to the contention ratio they have promised you on signing up for their service. Some ISP's especially the one's that are trying to build up a large customer base by giving free months or reduced price for the first x months and advertising this on the telly may be oversubscribed at certain periods of the year when many people are joining, not adding additional servers to cope with the demand. [They won't install extra capacity until they are sure people are staying with them.] Have you ever heard of an ISP that says, "Sorry we can't take you on at the moment, we have too many customers" :rolleyes:I may be wrong with this explanation but if I am, others will correct. :unsure: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
