Kirbster
Hi all,A friend of mine didn't realise that they had to activate their Office XP product, obviously now it is operating with reduced functionality. However when I click on "activate product" nothing happens. Also can I presume that the number that appears after "this product is registered to" is the serial number??? We are in Australia for 5 months and her Office XP CD is in the UK!!!! Does she need to contact her father for the number on the CD or manual or is the number I was talking about that number???All help would be appreciated! djohn
Hi Kirbster. No, the number you will need is the "Product Key". It should be on a sticker on the jewel case that holds the CD. j.[Edit] Don't forget you have to be on-line before you press the "Activate" link. This should then automatically activate the product through M/S. even though he/she has gone past the number of time of use before activating. If not then phone M/S UK with the product key number. You will go through an automated system where you press the keys on your phone and a number will be read out to you. you type this number into the box on screen and the product will activate. If this fails then phone again and speak to customer services, they will sort it straight away. j. Kirbster
so she needs to contact her dad to get the product key off the case?? What about the fact that activate product seems to do nothing? I remember when i activated mine it asked me for product key. Hers doesn't even do that, is the procedure different once your time has run out?
djohn
No, When you click on the "Activate" link it shouldn't ask for anything at all.The link will connect you to M/S site and that will scan your program and say "Activation successful" Or "Activation failed, please phone this number" and will show a number on-screen to call. j. Kirbster
thanks for your prompt response, I will try it again once she returns and speaks to her Dad to get the product key. BTW, he's not very computer literate, how many digits is it? I remember it's a combination of letters and numbers, is it 5 groups of 5 characters? djohn
Just thinking Kirbster. The only time you use the product key is when you install Office or the operating system. To activate it's just a matter of being on-line and clicking the activate button, then as in my post above. If he/she needs to contact M/S then have the product key at hand as they will ask for this. j.
djohn
Product key is 5 groups of 5 letters/numbers but if you use the number that is read out over the phone to you it's different and quite a long one.Don't worry about the amount in each box though because as you type in the correct amount your cursor will jump to the next box. j. Kirbster
just out of interest, she is still out, but I weas thinking, surely when she installed it, as you said before she must have entered the product key, so surely there must be a record of it somewhere on her computer. I looked at the registry on my computer and under CURRENT_USER/office/ 9.0/ general there is a entry for install product id, however this is only 24 characters long with a load of 0's at the front and then 3numbers before the 24 characters. Do you happen to know if maybe the last number added together with the 24 other characters is the product id?I am only running office 2000 not XP though, would it be different for Office XP? djohn
No that is not the "Product Key" The product key can be obtained from a program or application if it's already installed but this is something I would rather leave to one of the Moderators/Admins to explain. j
Kirbster
OK, I have the computer here now, It is online, but when I click on "activate product" nothing happens, there is no box or anything to type the product key into!!!!Help needed urgently please!!!!Should I be getting a box to enter the number in? Intratech
You put in the product key when you install the application. When activating the product you don't need the product key to activate the product once it's already installed.... just connect on the interent and click activate, then it will say if the activation was successful or not. Kirbster
when I click on the activate when it's online, absolutely nothing happens and it still is working in reduced functionality. There is no confirmation of anything either!!!!
nellie2
I think you need to give Microsoft a call then as Djohn suggested earlier.
nellie2
 Just had a thought ( I do sometimes) You haven't got a firewall on that machine that is stopping Office connecting to the internet have you?

Kirbster
i should get some sort of confirmation that it's worked or not worked when I click product activation shouldn't i?
djohn
Yes, you should. Either "Activation successful" or "Activation failed please call this number" The number will be displayed on screen.Phone Microsoft UK on Tel. number. 087060 10 100If you need the phone number for any other country please let me know as I have the full list. Just go through the phone menu until you are offered customer services and they will sort it out for you straight away. They will ask for the product key and also the ID number, they will talk you through how to display the ID number on-screen. Once they have this info they will give you a code number and explain how to input this to your PC. Don't worry about it as they are very helpful and will stay with you until your "Office" is working. j.

Boris
Belarc Advisor should give you the License No. + Key ???
djohn
Hi Boris. Kirbster has the product key but cannot get the activation to work. This is strange because even if it won't activate for some reason it should still give the message "Activation failed" along with a number to phone.
Boris
Yes - sorry - only just read the rest of the posts !
