NHS rapped over Belfry allegations Apr 6 2004

Birmingham Post and Mail - Quote

NHS officials wasted £70,000 by repeatedly cancelling conferences at a Warwickshire hotel where they were meant to be discussing ways of saving money, it was reported today.

The National Primary Care Development Team, which looks at improving the efficiency of doctors’ surgeries, ran up the bill after cancelling four different conferences at the four-star Belfry Hotel near Sutton Coldfield.

The unit blamed diary clashes for the cancellations, according to report in the The Times.

The fee would have paid the annual salaries of four newly qualified nurses.

A spokesman for the unit said four payments between £14,000 and £19,000 were made to cancel each conference in 2003.

An internal review was carried out as a result of the cancellations, resulting in the sacking of an event management company and promises events would be held at venues with more flexible booking policies, the report said.

The team first called off two meetings planned for January at a cost of £36, 383 in cancellation fees.

The team arranged a further conference for February but later cancelled at a cost of £19,369.

Another conference was arranged for September and that too was cancelled at a cost of £14,152.

At one event that did take place the unit was charged £200 after two delegates failed to show up.

The Government need to get to grips with such nonsenses.

Do you have similar examples in your area ?

My eldest son is a consultant with the NHS.

Some of the stories he relates about needless frittering away of finances are (almost) unbelievable.

Problem with a lot of them is that the waste is ordered from upon high - government ministry level.

Ma had another stroke before Xmas and the care at Kingston was top-notch, but the admin side was abismal. The ward sister didn't know how to use pc to print off discharge letter although she'd been trained.

BTW the managers in NHS have increased by 57%!!! while nurses by only 16%!!!
