Agent Smith Posted April 15, 2004 Report Share Posted April 15, 2004 Hi chadwaltrs,I think the more pertinent answer here, should be "why can you not see your hard drive?"If the drive has failed, or the ide or power cable become loose, then simply using a boot disc will not help you. Have you checked to see if the drive is being recognised in your BIOS?If you need more assistance with this, then please post back with some more details (exact problems and messages, component specs etc.), and we shall see if we can help. Agent Smith Posted April 15, 2004 Report Share Posted April 15, 2004 If you have checked the cables, and are happy thay are OK, and the drive is not being detected in your BIOS, then it sounds as though the drive is knackered I'm afraid.However, it may be worth having a fiddle, just in case. Check the jumper settings on the drive, and if it is set to cable select, try setting it to master (or vice versa), assuming you have the cd (or dvd) drive on a seperate ide cable, try switching the cables round, or even try switching the connection on the motherboard, so your drive uses the secondary ide chain. It may also be worth using the power lead from your cd drive just to be sure.Do you have any data on the drive you really need to try and get back?If not, and all the above fails, you could remove it from the machine and try a bit of percussive maintenance :P Mr. M. chadwaltrs Posted April 15, 2004 Author Report Share Posted April 15, 2004 I have tried switching the cords around but nothing will happen i and do not have the software that came with the hdd seeing as im not the original owner of it. It is old and running windows 95. I have two computers that it would be possible to test it on but one is my mothers and the other is my fathers and i don't think they'd allow a 15 year old mess with them.
