1. Dear Forum Members, My Asus K70IC notebook running 64-bit Windows 7 failed to boot 4 days ago. It was a very hot day and the soldering of a BGA IC set loose. The problem was fixed by reballing. The notebook is now working perfect but previous Windows 7 installation cannot boot any more. I get BSOD and error 0x0000007B at the beginning of boot process. I tried system repair tools (no errors), chkdsk /f (no errors), fixing MBR, rebuiling BCD (cannot find installation) but nothing helped. Nothing had been changed in the config before switching on again the working notebook except one thing: HDD was removed. After realizing the notebook does not boot I removed the HDD and verified it in another Win7 notebook to make sure HDD is OK. It was OK, but I'm afraid the Win7 on another notebook automatically made changes in the BCD or drive letters. Could it be the main reason? Please help me preserve the current Win7 installation on my notebook because installed apps store some very essential information for me which cannot be restored after a clean install. Clean install would be disaster for me. Thank you in advance.

3. I was using my external HDD (2TB Seagate) in order to transfer files. During that, I noticed some malfunctions on my system (it was running too slow, Windows Explorer crashed). When Explorer crashed, file transportation stopped. I was afraid, but I tried to access my data and it seemed to be working. I tried to open a movie but it couldn't load. I thought of restarting, which took so long... So I unplugged the HDD and at that time it managed to shut down. I logged on to Vista but the disk couldn't be mounted. I plugged it but nothing happened. I unplugged it and I heard this specific sound that notifies that something has been unplugged. I thought of logging to Ubuntu 10.04 and see what I can do. I plugged the HDD, but I couldn't see it. I opened GParted but I couldn't see it either. I tried with Disc Utility and there it was! I tried to mount it but a got an error message stating to run chkdsk. I typed chkdsk F: /i for a quick check and I am waiting...It didn't seem however to be doing something... Having external drive plugged in causes serious problems on my system's speed. I unplugged it. As soon as I did it, the chkdsk has finished. The answer is that the file system isn't NTFS but RAW. I then tried to fix this issue using testdisk. The log from my first attempt is the following Sat Oct 27 10:51:01 2012 Command line: TestDisk TestDisk 6.11, Data Recovery Utility, April 2009 Christophe GRENIER OS: Linux, kernel 2.6.32-42-generic (#95-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 25 15:56:09 UTC 2012) Compiler: GCC 4.4 - Jun 23 2009 17:48:38 ext2fs lib: 1.41.11, ntfs lib: 10:0:0, reiserfs lib: none, ewf lib: none /dev/sda: LBA, HPA, LBA48, DCO support /dev/sda: size 488397168 sectors /dev/sda: user_max 488397168 sectors /dev/sda: native_max 488397168 sectors /dev/sda: dco 488397168 sectors Warning: can't get size for Disk /dev/mapper/control - 0 B - CHS 1 1 1, sector size=512 Hard disk list Disk /dev/sda - 250 GB / 232 GiB - CHS 30401 255 63, sector size=512 - ATA WDC WD2500BEVS-2 Disk /dev/sdd - 4009 MB / 3824 MiB - CHS 1018 124 62, sector size=512 - FLASH Drive SM_USB20 Disk /dev/sde - 2000 GB / 1863 GiB - CHS 243201 255 63, sector size=512 - Seagate Desktop Partition table type (auto): Intel Disk /dev/sde - 2000 GB / 1863 GiB - Seagate Desktop Partition table type: Intel Interface Advanced Geometry from i386 MBR: head=255 sector=63 NTFS at 0/1/1 get_geometry_from_list_part_aux head=255 nbr=2 get_geometry_from_list_part_aux head=8 nbr=1 get_geometry_from_list_part_aux head=16 nbr=1 get_geometry_from_list_part_aux head=32 nbr=1 get_geometry_from_list_part_aux head=64 nbr=1 get_geometry_from_list_part_aux head=128 nbr=1 get_geometry_from_list_part_aux head=240 nbr=1 get_geometry_from_list_part_aux head=255 nbr=2 1 P HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 243200 254 63 3907024002 [Expansion Drive] NTFS, 2000 GB / 1863 GiB ntfs_boot_sector 1 P HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 243200 254 63 3907024002 [Expansion Drive] NTFS, 2000 GB / 1863 GiB NTFS at 0/1/1 file_pread(6,16,buffer,3907024064(243200/254/63)) read err: Input/output error filesystem size 3907024002 1 sectors_per_cluster 8 0 mft_lcn 786432 0 mftmirr_lcn 244189000 0 clusters_per_mft_record -10 0 clusters_per_index_record 1 0 Boot sector Status: OK Backup boot sector ntfs_boot_sector: Can't read backup boot sector. 4. I'm running Win 7 x64 and just installed a 3TB hdd initialized in GPT format. Unfortunately it showed around 746GB. So I updated my BIOS(Intel DP67DE mobo) and after the update, entered F2 and confirmed that the HDD is recognized as 3TB. But when I started windows, it's still 746GB. What is the problem here? I have not formatted the hdd at all. Any help is appreciated. thanks!
5. Heya folks! First time on this forum, hope you all can help me out here. I recently upgraded both my PC to Windows 8 Pro (64bit). Now before I did this I copied a lot of files to an external HDD. It is a 1TB disk in a Rocketfish USB 3.0 enclosure. Now before I did this upgrade this drive was working fine. After the installations were done I noticed that my main PC was freezing up alot. At first I thought I had done something by updating the BIOS, but I noticed I started having the same issues when I connected the drive to my laptop as well. Here is the issue, basically the drive will mount and I can oped the root of it. I can see all the files, but if I try to open and files/folders it freezes up Windows Explorer and I usually have to reboot the PC as nothing will respond. I tried connecting it to my iMac with similar results. I ran a Check Disk on it and it found no errors. I am at a loss, I would really like to recover this drive as it is almost entirely filled with data (930GB out of 1TB). Any help is appreciated! And thanks in advance.
6. I have Windows 7 64 bits on a new Lenovo Thinkpad E530 laptop (previously I had Windows 8 with the exact same problem). I connect an external hard disk drive via a SATA-USB interface. The hdd was previously the primary disk in a PC and also has a Windows 7 64 bits installation. I need to copy a few files from it. The device manager finds the disk drive and says that the device is working properly and that the latest driver is installed. But I have no access to it in the file manager. Even in the command prompt I cannot do "cd D:" but then get the reply that the drive is not ready. Device manager / Ext Hard Disk properties / Volume says that its status is "Not Initialized". Would it help to "initialize" the disk? How do I do it? Would an "initialization" remove the content of the disk? Is there another way? Thank you for any advice! Best regards to you all
7. Hi forum, I need to replace my laptop's hard drive (SMART keeps on warning me), and I want to keep my original copy of Windows. The problem is that is an OEM version, and I don't have the installation disc. Is there any way to download a copy of Windows and use the original license? Or may be do something else? Thanks.
