-pops-
Very odd thing to study................I doubt if you will believe this but I worked for a company where someone was involved with identifying and synthesising the substance that make stale cat's pee smell like stale cat's pee.If anyone is sufficiently interested, the material is called 4-Ethoxy-2-methyl-2-butanethiol and it is described in French Patent 2653766 :o :o :o :o

-pops-
Difficult to order a pint of that if you've already had a skinful. :DI doubt that a pint has ever been made. It has a truly unbelievably powerful smell. You most certainly wouldn't be able to stand near to it if it had.The amount of it in cat pee is in fractions of a part per trillion (that's why it was so difficult to identify) and we all know how pongy that can be.I might add that in very great dilution, the odour of the material resembles blackcurrants. That is the reason for patenting the synthesis - so that it can be used in flavours and perfumes to imitate the blackcurrant aroma. Some people (including me) think that blackcurrants smell of cat pee anyway and blackcurrants (especially the leaves) do, indeed, contain a thio compound (thiomenthone, p-Mentha-8-thiol-3-one) which gives the specific character to them. :) :) :) :) :)

-pops-
Sorry, artist. This is normal talk for me. It's when it gets combined with French that it gets really complicated (this was a French company I worked for). :D :D
