AlanHo Posted May 13, 2004 Report Share Posted May 13, 2004 My Windows XP is set to automatically download Microsoft updates but to then ask me whether I want to install them. This - I thought - was working fine.Yesterday I saw a message on another forum that there were new updates released and I realised that my computer had not done its automatic download. Hence I went onto the MS site and manually downloaded and installed KB 840374 and KB 828026.This morning when I booted my computer I got the normal MS message from the download icon in the task tray that critical downloads were waiting to be installed. I clicked on the icon and asked for details - only to learn that they were the same patches that I manually installed yesterday. To be safe, I let them install anyway.I then went onto the MS update site and looked at "View Installation History" to find that these updates were indeed listed twice - one pair dated 13 May labelled 'Automatic update' and the previous pair dated 12 May labelled 'Web site'. Looking further down the list this behaviour has been repeated several times - but not consistently. Some manual downloads are not repeated by automatic downloads later.I realise it is not important - but can anyone throw any light on this behaviour.Just curious !!!! andsome Posted May 13, 2004 Report Share Posted May 13, 2004 I have my computer figured to warn me that updates are waiting to be downloaded. I also saw an item somewhere else saying that those same two updates were available. When I clicked onto Windows Update, the scan showed that I needed those updates, so I downloaded them. I do check from time to time, and on several occasions have found updates waiting, and like you have received a message later on saying that they are there on the website. When I then visit the website I find that they are not there after all, as I had already picked them up previously. SO, you are not alone in being puzzled.
