Dumbing down of our education system

Recommended Posts

I kid you not, what follows is the assessment for a 1st Year degree at one of the countries newest Universities. Personally I'm disgusted that they are making things so easy - no wonder Labour thinks everyone can go to Uni.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Exercise 1

For the first part of the assignment you are to gather information about your PC, either at the University or at Home.

For this exercise, compile printed reports about your System, Printer, Display and Drives from the report function as demonstrated in class.

Exercise 2

For the second part of the assignment produce diagrams of the filing structure of your home PC or your Drive N at the University.

You may use screen dumps from Windows Explorer or My Computer.

Ensure you have separated your system into a logical structure that is organised into folders such Module, Week, Word etc.

Exercise 3

Identify the following file types and produce a table detailing a brief description and an example of an application that creates them along with any useful comments.

–jpg, gif, bmp, doc, txt, pdf, htm, wav, avi, dll, exe, cab and zip.

Use the following web sites to help.

Exercise 4

Create a zip disk as a backup of a section of your home PC or your Drive N on your University PC.

Ensure this zip example fits on to one floppy drive and supply it as part of your assignment submission.

Exercise 5

In no more than three hundred words describe the step by step actions required to install a new printer onto a PC running Windows 2000. The use of screen dumps/shots will enhance your answers and should be used whenever appropriate.

It is understood that this function is not available on all University PCs. However, if you do not have a PC of your own then there are numerous web sites that describe what you need to do.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Do that little lot and you are fairly sure of getting over 60% (if you get it right) which will earn you a 2.1 for that module, over 70% and you will have got a 1st.

What a joke.

To you lot all this may seem like childs play, but think about the complexity it raises in the academic mind. To the tutors/lecturers/professors who are versed only in thinking about hypothetical things, like which way up will the butter side of the toast land when hits the carpet, these things are strong meat, and certainly warrent a FIRST or a Hons!!
