Boris
80 strand IDE cables and 40 strand IDE cables both have 40 pins - can you use either type irrespective of your PC's age/mobo/bios ?i.e. are they both backwardly and forwardly compatible ?Please settle this argument I was having with someone at work today !I don't see how they can be - I thought the 80 strand ones were developed because of Cable Select. mark2
I believe 80s are backward compatible, but a 40 wire is only any good for UDMA33, and 80s will go up to UDMA mode100

Paul
Speaking as the all knowledgeable 1 on IDE cables, an 80 core cable will work fine on any IDE drive ;) When working in UDMA mode there are still only the same 40 wires in use as with the old 40 wire type, the only difference is the extra 40 wires are grounded and play no part in data transfer other than to prevent data corruption at high speeds, they do this reducing the chances of interference as the grounded wires seperate the 40 data wires from each other B)
Boris
I am not worthy ! :D I couldn't see a 40 being usable at higher UDMA modes. Thanks all for your help - I'll print this out for him as it proves my point !
