catgate Posted June 17, 2004 Report Share Posted June 17, 2004 I was recently making a back up copy of a disc for a neighbour (who doe not have a RW drive) and when I took out the donor CD I had to drop it, it was so hot. The Cd out of the RW drive was also quite warm but no where near like the "donor" disc.Now the background is as follows. My non RW drive is relatively new (18 months old) and is Samsung 54x, my RW is aged (6 years?) and is 4x, but I record at 2x to prevent empty buffer problems. I started doing this when my previous Read Only Cd drive was very slow (6 years ago?). As a result of the above I decided to replace my RO drive and this morning installed a new Samsung 48x. I have copied a CD, but with less content than the above mentioned one (copy time 14 min compared with 29 min previously) and whilst the temperature was not as high as before it seemed to me to be inordinately warm. I must confess to being a very infrequent copier and have never paid much attention to this phenomenon, but I should have thought that any experience such as the one when I copied my friends back up would have made an impression on my mind (in addition to my hand).Can any of you "enlightened ones" shed some light across here please? catgate Posted June 17, 2004 Author Report Share Posted June 17, 2004 im not really sure what you are asking, but, Yes Cd's can be hot when the are fresh from the burner I am really asking if it is normal for CDs being used as "donors" to become so hot as to be virtually unholdable, when all they have been doing is being read. I can imagine the CD being "burned" getting reasonably warm, due to energy input, but the temp. on the "donor" alarmed me. I wondered if there was some sort of fault that could develop within a CD drive that could damage the disc. I have the RO drive at the top, the RW drive below it and the HD below that. There is space around them, of course, but only the amount allowed by the deign of the tower (make = Genius). I am using CeQuadrat as the software. Boris Are you copying "on the fly" ?I shall refrain from making any comment about zip drives and flys, and simply say that I do not really know what "on the fly" means. I know it has connotations of doing something whilst something else is in motion, but, like most American expressions(*) I feel it is not of my native tongue. What I was doing was copying from one CD to another rather than copying to hard disc and then recopying to the copy CD.(*) "checkout our checkout and then checkout". I had wondered on occasions. There is an awful lot of transatlantic gobblygook and acronym that is just beyond comprehension, and the way things change so quickly, one has hardly learned the meaning of the latest tripe before it has changed to something else. I have been involved with computers since the mid seventies and so my mind is full of meaningless sets of initials ...USM ..BBD ...RMP ...AST ...ASPI ...CROP ...BARG ...SXT...ETC!
