Badger
Hello again,I have now got Drive Image 7 and have imaged my C drive onto the Internal HDD which is enclosed in an external case.with a USB connection. Ellas and Nellie 2 I think will know what I am on about, as they helped me.Now I want to know if I can COPY my C drive onto this "external" HDD.I was going to do this on a seperate partition. I could then, in case of a HDD failure, remove the drive from the case, install it into the computer, and all should be well. The problem I have is, that in the user guide, the set up they illutstrate is to install the second HDD into the comp. as a slave. This Ext.drive (Which is an internal one) has to be set to Master for it to work.I do not know why this is.Can any one help please? Thanks. nellie2
Oh dear.... Ellas was our hardware guru.. but I will try my best to explain. When you are connecting a drive to your motherboard the cable running from the IDE slot usually has two connectors on it, one at the end of the cable and one about a third of the way down.If you connect a drive to the end of the cable then it must be configured as master, if you connect a drive to the other one then it is slave. This allows you to have two drives connected through the one cable. In most user guides that are explaining how to connect a second drive they will suggest you install it as a slave drive. However, there is nothing to stop you installing it as a master... as long as you have the jumpers set up correctly so that the mobo will recognise it as a master. JWith Master/Slave it dosen't matter where you place either drive along the cable. [unless there is a specific reason stated by Mr. Manual]If you use cable select [Master/Salve] then the master must be placed on the end of the cable....Not sure why it would need to be master ONLY - unless you bought an el cheapo one. Badger
Nellie 2 I do not think I have managed to explain what I am trying to do. To try and simplfy, the questions is:- Can I create a copy of my C drive using Drive Image and copy it onto a HDD which is installed into an External Case. I realise that I can copy the C drive onto an internal drive, set up as a slave(.As the manual explains this prodedure) but this is an external drive with an USB connection. In its instructions it say,for it to work it must be set to master. It is not connected to the IDE cable so I did not think this would apply. What I want to do, if it will work, is copy my C drive onto a partition of this second (External) drive. Then if this HDD fails,I can whip the drive out of the case, install it as the master in the computer and it will work. I am not very good at explaining myself when it gets to technical terms,so hope you will understand what I am getting at. J
Boris
When connected by USB - does your external H/D show in Windows Explorer/My Computer OK ?
stu4art
Hi BadgerI'm using v5 of Drive Image and I use the option to burn my HDD (pqi) image onto CD R's (it splits the pqi so it fits over x amount of CD R's). It seems to me that it would be a bit of a waste of space/money in comparison to using CD R's ;) it's always nice to know that you've got a working system in your cupboard!Regards STUart
nellie2
Ooops Sorry Badger... I'm with you now  I have a bit of a hangover this morning so the brain isn't totally into gear yet!! I shall get back to you on this unless someone else has any ideas or info for you.
Badger
Powerless Thank you for your help. I do not think you have understood what I am asking. Perhaps my reply to Nellie 2 will clarify. The Manual for the External case,in which you instal the internal drive, states that the drive has to be set to master. I do not know why it has to be, but do not think it refers to the IDE cable inside the computer. I am sorry to have caused confusion. Chris
Can you post a picture of the the Ext. Drive? It is not connected to the IDE cable so I did not think this would apply. What I want to do, if it will work, is copy my C drive onto a partition of this second (External) drive. Then if this HDD fails,I can whip the drive out of the case, install it as the master in the computer and it will work.If it's an IDE connection, yup.Doesn't matter which way you intall it slave or master [well in this case it does] you should be able to restore images.Your best bet is to just try it. Boris
What make is the Ext Drive ? Can you post a link to it ?You can copy a drive image file to any USB connected device provided that the device is big enough to take it.
nellie2
I'm with Powerless on this... give it a go and see what happens. As long as the drive is visible in My Computer you shouldn't have a problem. The manual recommends copying to a slave drive because the majority of people only have one master drive and that is the one with thier o/s on and there is no point copying an image to the drive that your o/s is on. So to make sure that people copy thier image to a totally seperate drive the manual says to copy to the slave drive. You on the other hand have set up a seperate drive as master.... shouldn't be a problem! Badger
Thank you all for your help. I shall try and copy my C drive onto a partition on this second HDD. I already have an image created onthe first partition. With regard to your question Boris I do not know the make of this drive case. It is not an external drive . It is an internal drive fitted into a "USB 2.0 Ide External Case". It is 80GB devided into 2 40Gb partitions. I am using it solely for backups. On one partition,I have,as I said an Image, and backups of my data. The other partition is empty,so I thought I could use it to COPY the whole of C drive so that if this HDD fails and the image I created did not work (do not know why it shouldn't but) I could simply take this drive out of the case, install it as master in the computer and I would be away again. I realise that this is a belt and braces (I have ne need to use either) scenerio, but as I have all that free space, why not use it. So my question is or was. Can I copy, not make an image, of my C drive onto this usb connected hard drive and then use the hard drive as a master drive in my computer,if it ever became necessary. Thanks again for all your help and please forgive me for all the confusion that I seem to have caused. J
nellie2
I don't see why not... just make sure the partition you copy to is a primary partition.
-pops-
I'll try not to add to the confusion but, if you have an IDE drive in an external USB case, all the decoding from IDE to USB is done by the circuitry in the case and the whole thing then becomes a USB item as far as the computer is concerned. Back inside the case, the IDE drive MUST be set as master to enable the conversion circuitry to recognise it. So, once you drive is set up correctly in its case, forget all about it being an IDE device.
Badger
Thank you POPS for expaining that,I understand now why the HDD has to be set to MASTER.Nellie 2 I undestand about making the partition a primary partition so that I can COPY my C drive. I did not realise that,so thanks for the info. I have to get a Longer USB 2.0 cable before I can attempt to do the copying. The one I have will not reach now. Thanks again folks.
