Shirley Crabtree
I've just upgraded a PC to XP for a relative and all was well barring the fact that onboard modem and sound had exclamation marks beside them in device manager.I don't have a disk for them so tried to download drivers from the net.The hsp56 pctel modem XP drivers were quickly installed and the modem was showing as being ok.I couldn't find the audio drivers though....All I know is that the mobo uses Acer 1631 chipset. So,I fitted a creative PCI soundcard I found kicking around and Windows found the driver and installed it (I disabled onboard sound first!) and lo and behold.......The modem's disappeared from Device Manager.Any ideas?Shirl. -pops-
Try moving the PCI card to a different slot. The modem may be trying to share an IRQ with the sound card.
Scarecrow Man
The sound and modem are connected?I have never seen an onboard modem before.. though I have seen an onboard lan card.If you are not using an onboard modem, move it to a differen't slot inside the computer.disable irq assignment for com ports in your bios (just disable com ports or serial ports)download latest (stable) drivers for your operating systemif none of those work, go buy a new one. you can probably get a winmodem for about $15 US
Shirley Crabtree
Just to verify...The soundcard seems to be ok that I fitted. The modem is a hps56 micromodem....I can see the chip on the mobo and nearby is a riser thing that goes to the back panel to accept the phoneline connector. The modem was showing in Device Manager until I installed the PCI soundcard and disabled onboard sound. My immediate thought was to move it to a different PCI slot....same problem I'm afraid.Cheers.Shirl. Shirley Crabtree
Have you tried re-installing the drivers?Their was no device showing to install drivers for!I've found a V92 PCI modem kicking about so I'm just downloading drivers for that.Fingers crossed.*Edit*.....Bah...that modem is FUBAR...Looks like I'm down the shop tomorrow for a replacement. nellie2
:( .... you tried rebooting to see if windows finds it?
Agent Smith
I have a horrible feeling the modem will come back if you enable the onboard sound again. Have you tried doing so, to see what happens.Mr. M.
Shirley Crabtree
.... you tried rebooting to see if windows finds it?Hi Nellie.Lol....Yeah,about a hundred times...I've also tried scanning for hardware changes in Device Manager....no joy :(I have a horrible feeling the modem will come back if you enable the onboard sound again. Have you tried doing so, to see what happens.Mr. M.Hi Mr Mouse....Yes I've tried that...the modem was still missing from Device Manager.I see where you're coming from though.I'm not a lover of Mobos with onboard stuff....I've noticed with this one that if onboard sound is disabled in bios I can't change the settings for the onboard modem....The feature is ghosted. If I enable onboard audio I can then alter the onboard modem settings between enabled and disabled.I have no idea what this all means.....I've tried my best to avoid Mobos that have onboard stuff....unfortunately this isn't mine!!Barring any other advice I might reformat the PC tomorrow and reinstall Windows...AGAIN...But I'll tackle the driver updates in a slightly different way.Cheers.Shirl.PS...All of my spare mice are out as loaners to my friends....I'm doing everything via the damned keyboard... :censored:

Scarecrow Man
Well, if you really want to go this far.. go to a website and download a upgrade for your bios, I don't know if it would do anything, but it's worth a try... so,Google it!
