Not wishing to live in 'student digs' another day means renting a flat is the only other option.Has anyone done this in the past? If so, is it acceptable to offer a montly rental lower than the one advertised? I know it isn't perhaps very British but surely the rent is just a guide and there can be some negotiation? If there is a big demand you will get people offering above the asking rate just to get somewhere to live.I think you'll find very few, if any, areas where demand for accomodation is so low that a lower than stated offer is accepted. AlanHo Posted July 6, 2004 Report Share Posted July 6, 2004 Here in Solihull there is a shortage of flats and rents are high - but it's a different story with large houses for rent - supply exceeds demand and rent haggling is common.Another decision for you is furnished or unfurnished - again rent levels will vary according to area and local demand. Take your time, go see a number of estate agents and thoroughly research the market in your chosen area. My son got a big rent reduction on a flat when he persuaded the landlord to let it unfurnished - he then bought some quite good second hand stuff and was well in pocket over the first year. Plan is to go for unfurnished simply because thats whats most readily available but also to save cost.Was thinking of asking for about a 7% reduction on the monthly rental and see what reaction I get! Shark landlords will refuse to give you back your bond ( £1,000 ?) if there's so much as a beer stain on the sofa. I've seen books on low-tech furniture in the library, fantastic stuff made from pallets and old tyres.
