Although Gustav Mahler is my musical idol, I cannot listen to him tonight unless I play a CD. However, for anyone prepared to give it a go, and try something with a lot more substance than the latest bang bang or yatter yatter from the top twenty, try switching on BBC2 at 7-30PM. The recently refurbished organ in the Albert Hall is being heard for the first time since the refurbishment, in a performance of Toccata and fugue in D minor by Bach. In my younger (fitter) days, I would go there often. Where else could you get an evening of top class entertainment by the world's greatest artists and orchestras for four quid?Even a quick look at a televised Prom will show you that the arena audience is almost all young people having a good time. I urge anyone and everyone who is not already familiar with this great celebration of good music to at least have a look and/or listen. Even if you can't catch them through the season, don't miss the last night which is a big party.The Proms is the biggest music festival in the world in quite reasonably civilised conditions (no wallowing in mud for days at a time). It was an unusual arrangement last night of Bach's Toccata and fugue in D minor, involving not just the mighty organ, but a large orchestra as well, in an arrangement by Henry Wood, the proms founder. The evening was well rounded of with Gustav Holst's Planets suite. I really do feel that so many people miss one of the great experiences in life by not being prepared to at least give classical music a listen. This was proved during the world cup a few years ago, when just because people heard it on the radio or television so often, or whilst in the crowd, Nessan Dorma became so popular, that even pop fans were whistling the tune. It's no longer a tinny representation of classical instruments, it's right on the nail.This is not a threat to orchestras. No. Rather, it enables composers access to an orchestra in their living room. They can test their compositions fully before handing over the scores to those fascinating people in strange garb who produce such wonderful sounds from assemblages of woods, metals, bones and skins. I brought a CD home from California a few years ago. There is however NO comparison to a live concert, with a first class symphony orchestra, and perhaps a choir in full cry. If it is one of your favourite pieces being performed well, it far outclasses a CD at home. A CD however, has to suffice more often than not.
