Please help! What happened!?

Hey there!

Well- long story short, my laptop has been a real pain, I keep ketting this " Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page, as a result,page may not display properly".

It keeps popping up & is driving me MAD! --> :shutup: Now, I take great care of my computer, have hijackthis,adaware,sygate,spyblaster,etc... whew, anywho- I STILL am having this darn message, so I decided to download IE-SPYAD . Great! But, it aint workin'! I followed the simple steps as listed, and some of the wordings when I opened the zip, where different, when I tried to install it, it said something about nothing being found! I tried over & over, to install this. I searched my computer to see if it was on there, it was, angis.zip. When I righ clicked it to see what exactly it was, I got a message about the loaction being incorrect. I deleted it, want to start over- but the same thing happens, it wont work when I follow the exact steps in the thread posted in one of these forums. I just want to get rid of this activex (I dont know why it is acting up so suddenly, I NEVER messed around with my settings..) any help would be peachy! Thanks!

Hi!

I went to the first link, and when I typed in the exact addresses to add to list, it kept telling me "must contain prefix to assure safe connection". I swear, I typed exactly what I was supposed to, even copied and pasted the links! With the http:// and all! So, now it wont let me add to the trusted sites! I cant figure it out!

Also, the link you provided for installing the IE Spyad , that is what I was following ,but some of the wording I got in the messages that came up were different than listed (in those screen snapshots) & I tried by choosing some option to install (I wish I remember the exact message, but I cant).

When I tried to install (after opening the zip) the black box said something about there not being any reponse or anything found (again,cant remember exactly, I exited quickly). I tried again, but the same thing happened. I never got the options pictured. So, I looked on my computer, there is a IE Spyad file, with a bunch of things in it (adult,child,copying,ie-ads.reg,etc,etc) & a couple other items. Im soo confused! Looks like it is on there, but it wont work. When I click the file it says it needs to know the file that created it. I just cant figured out where I messed up! Should I delete ALL of this, and try to start over? Im just so lost. I am worried someone could be messing with my computer! Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

Hey. I had the same problem when I first started using Ie-Spyad. If you got to the screen that shows (adult,child,copying,ie-ads.reg,etc,etc), there should be install.bat. Double click it and a screen with #1 uninstall, #2 install, #3 remove porn, #4 add porn I forget exactly but just hit the #2 it will install, then if you want to add the adult sites hit#4 then #5 to exit. I hope this helps. I have Win Xp so I dont know if this helps but under the trusted sites there is a box that you can uncheck that says it requires https verification or something like that. I had to uncheck it to add sites that just were http or www. Again I hope this helps you. :)

Also go into IE, go to Tools > Internet Options. click the Security tab, and set all to default. If you ActiveX is not working, it may be disabled, or set to not run unless trusted, or digitally signed.

You'd better uninstall "Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration"from the Add/Remove Windows Components.

Hey everyone!

Thanks so much for all your help! I was able to fix the IE Spyad, (at least I think! It did say success! ) but, there is no icon or logo on my screen, or in my toolbars, so I am unsure If I still messed up somewhere- hopefully it is working!

Also, I tried unchecking the box in the settings, as melmcbee suggested, it worked! So, thanks a bunch for that! The only problem I am having is that darn ActiveX thing - :blink: I tried a couple things. I followed the steps, the link provided by nellie2 (thanks!). Added those links to trusted zones, but I still get the 2 popups in a row. Scarecrow man, I followed the steps you suggested, (click the Security tab, and set all to default. If you ActiveX is not working, it may be disabled, or set to not run unless trusted, or digitally signed. ) do I click "default" on internet, local intranet, restricted & trusted zones? because, I dont know if it is supposed to, but allof those options are already on default, because it is not clickable (that option is faded and wont let me click it). I am just confused as to what I did to mess it all up. Should I just add activex to my trusted zones? Maybe that would stop it? Finally, my last question is, bu6z suggested to uninstall Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration", but I looked for it under add/remove in control panel and did ot see it there. Im lost! :ph34r: sorry for this long post, thanks for all your help!

Putting everything to default is probably best. Those are the settings designed to work, so if they don't, you've got a deeper problem.

Hi PoisonIvy... if IE Spyad has installed ok then you don't need to worry about anything, you don't get an icon or shortcut as it is launched when you launch IE. If you look to the bottom right of your task bar then if you go to a restricted site, or a site that Spyad is protecting you from then you will see a little red circle.. like in the pic below.

Cool, Yeah, I think the IE Spyad is working fine. I STILL cant get rid of the activex problem. I tried everything, all set to default, I also added it trusted sites? I just cant figure out what happened there.

By the way, I dwnlded AVG last night, I am pleased, it found viruses that my norton anti virus did not! Crazy right? I was shocked. I am wondering though, HOW I get these! I have Sygate, adaware, hijackthis, etc,etc. I thought that they would prevent me from getting them! Anyway, does anyone have any last ideas on the activex problem? thanks for your help, all of you!

I have my active X settings set to medium and that does me ok!!

Sygate, adaware, hijackthis won't prevent you from getting virus's.. only an updated AV will do that.

If you are happy with AVG then great but it is not a good idea to run two anti-virus programs as there could be conflicts, are you sure that Norton was up to date?

Whoo hoo! I got it! Thanks so much you guys, I could not f done this without your help! It was actually on ebay, I would be searching and it would pop up each time. I read that post scarecrow man posted, and it really helped! I looked carefully, and sure enough- a "doubleclick.net" banner was on the ebay pages, and on my restricted zones, s I removed it and the pop up is gone! I am wondering though, should I contact ebay about this? I assume a lot of users are having this problem and dont know how to fix it (darn doubleclick!). Again, thanks so much! :D

Its funny but as I was searching google I came accross a few entries under this subject for the ebay forums, but when I went to view them the topics didn't exist!!

I suggest you get the google toolbar, brilliant at stopping popups, doubleclick.net is in your restricted zones for a good reason.

This works fine on my Windows 98SE box with MSIE v5.5 SP2.

In the C:\Windows\System folder is a file called shdoclc.dll

Copy that file into another directory since it cannot be modified while Windows is running.

Using Resource Hacker from: http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

open that file which you copied into another directory and search

along the String table to delete the line to prevent those warnings.

You will end up at: String Table Folder 503.

Delete just line 8033 and re-compile.

If you don't understand that then you shouldn't be messing with the file.

Now reboot into DOS and overwrite that file you backed up over the one in

the C:\Windows\System folder.

There are no more warnings even when ActiveX is disabled!
