Can't remove programmes

I have Windows 2000 Pro and when I recently tried to remove a programme I no longer need using "Add/Remove Programmes", although it showed in the list, it was greyed out and I could not remove it. I don't know why this occurs nor how to actually correct it to enable me to remove the programme.

Are the other programs in Add/remove listed correctly (i.e. not greyed out)?

It may be a characteristic of the program in that it requires its own removal service rather than that provided by Windows. Look in the program itself, especially in the help files, to see if this is so.

My philosophy is to leave unwanted programs where they are unless they are causing mischief or you need the space. It can happen that you wreck other things by non-judicious removal.

Welcome to the forum :)

Especially if you remove shared files.

Thanks for the welcomes, it's nice to feel wanted.

I have tried to re-install it and I have Add/Remove, but that doesn't show the programme. It's McAfee Anti-Virus Home edition that I am trying to remove because I have an updated version installed but the older version conflicts with it.

If McAfee is anything like Norton, it requires spcial treatment to remove it. This involves a complicated procedure detailed on the website..

If I were you, I'd chuck out your new McAfee, remove the old one (however possible) and select any one of a number of free anti-virus applications.

(How can a company market a new version of a product that conflicts with a previous version - and then not provide details of how to remedy that? )

I appreciate all of the replies and have just spent about two hours getting very stressed as I uninstalled the new version (successfully) and then tried to uninstall the old version of anti virus and firewall, without success. I get a message that reads: "Cannot delete cpd.exe: Access is denied. The source file may be in use." Haven't got a clue what that means so gave up and had to re-install the new version as best I can . It means that despite paying for the updated firewall I can only access the older version. The only information I can find from McAfee is to use the Add/Remove programme in Windows to remove it - BUT that doesn't work with it..... Really cracks me up. I do feel inclined to get rid of the lot and do as was said by 'Pops' in an earlier reply. I'll keep watching this posting to see if somebody can think of something which so far we haven't.

Thanks again.

Find, or have somebody recommend, a freeware registry cleaner which displays a list of entries. Go through it and delete any entries to the software you want to remove.

Alternatively, go into your programmes folder, find the unwanted programme folder and delete it. Then run a registry cleaner. There is a risk of deleting shared files but you can always go into your recycle bin and select 'restore'. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. :)
