The battle for email Privacy

Back to the point.

That article in The Register sums up pretty much the sensationalist journalism that it is known for - a sort of computer oriented Daily Mailicious - find several amusing, unrelated and not particularly relevant stories, link them together, try and associate them into a common theme and then embellish into the realms of extreme fantasy, making them seem as negative and anti-social as possible.

OK, The Register does produce some interesting and relevant computer news but more and more this is scattered amongst irrelevant tittle-tattle and the products of an overactive imagination.

Regarding G-mail. I signed up to be kept informed of it (not that I particularly wanted it, just to be kept informed). I have since heard nothing about it.

I don't have any problem with the email services I already use. I can't imagine anyone needing the vast capacity the G-mail claims to provide and I can store any messages I wish to retain on my own machines/CDs/ floppies/Zip disks. All the email messages I have ever received (since 1992), that I wish to retain, reside quite happily on a Zip disk (two actually - one is a backup) and there is plenty of room to spare.

I think it is one of those "because it's there" (as in "Why did you climb Everest?") facilities that very few, if any, of us needs.

I scrap all emails as soon as I've read them. Overall, we seems to be losing the Liberty war. What with bandwidth capping and loss of privacy I'm wondering if there shouldn't be a movement towards a community-funded ISP, a company owned by the community. Sod BT and Google.
