Please help! I've tried EVERYTHING!

Hey there,

My start menu is very much trackrats, it does not say. I have been super busy, hence my delay in finally fixing this, but I am home for the night & should be able to do the system restore tonight. I wrote down the steps listed in a previous post, however, it does not say if I need to turn it off, reboot in safemode, or scan for viruses while it is turned off, etc. I know how to do the system restore, but need to know what next after turning off.

From another site, it sounded like, I have to turn it off, then reboot into safemode, run a virus scan, then turn it off? I apologise for all the questions- obviously, Im really worried because it sounds like system restore is very very powerful so I dont want to make a mistake 8)

So, if someone can tell me, just exactly what I have to do for the system restore process, I can do that tonight. Im hoping it will clean my computer, then I'll post my HJT logfile. Hopefully I'll be able to do this without goofing. Again, you all have been so helpful & I am finally getting to the root of the problem, got the new hjt, etc. thanks for sticking with me through this mess!

Right seeing as your start menu is the same as mine here we go.

1. To turn of system restore left click START

2. Right click My Computer

3. Left click Properties

4. Left click System Restore

5.Put a tick in the box that says turn of system restore

6. Left click Apply

7. left click Yes

8. Left click OK.

Reboot you computer and keep tapping the F8 key (sometimes it is the F5 key instead)

From the options use the up and down arrows on the keyboard to select Safe Mode, hit the enter button on the keyboard then hit it again.

You will see text scrolling on your monitor after that it will take you into Safe mode. Do your virus scan. then reboot your computer and follow steps 1 - 8 this time takeing the tick out of the box to turn system restore back on.

If I have missed anything I am sure someone else will add a bit more.

Hey there Trackrat, thanks so much, for the most part it was very simple

I got through 1-8. and restarted in safemode. Right after that, it asked me to login as admin or my regular login. I clicked on my login, and it told me I was in safe mode. I went directly to AVG to start the scan, but it wont do anything!!

Furthermore, I cant get into any websites, to scan, like pandascan, so I am stuck! I left my laptop alone (SR IS STILL OFF) & I am on our main computer posting here. Could someone tell me how I can get a virus scan to work? I did not want to mess with anything & thought leaving it until I know what would be safest is a good idea... I hope this is normal? thanks :whistling:

yeah, I know I have to be in safe mode, but I am supposed to scan for viruses while SR is off, so I am wondering how I can do that? I dont know how to/or what to change to allow me to scan.

When I clicked my AVG it said: "Driver Core not found= winerr=2" .

Once I do that, I can reboot, turn it back on & hopefully I will be clean. I just need to figure out how I can scan. Any ideas? thanks,

Crystal

Ps; on my screen where it says safe mode,

it also says: Microsoft ®windows xp ®, has a long number then "service pack 1" . I dont know if this helps at all, but wanted to mention it if it explains my operating system, or anything for that matter.

Hi there,

Yes! I did it! The avg scan just ended and it said I am clean- I hope I am! No sign of the "dropper" or briss junk. Turned system restore back on, I just ran the Hjt scan & can post that, should I post that right away on that message board or do I need to run adaware first? I could not have gotten this far without the help, I really appreciate it!

One more thing, is there anything else I should change to keep my computer safer? I want to be sure my activex settings, and everything else is keeping me safe as possible. I heard something about a free download for xp, I believe to help with the security flaws- is this something I need? Thanks sooooo much!
