Electric guitar question - for techies

It is an audio lead the same as from any other appliance like a CD player, or record player.

Actually Hurdy, it is an electrical cable. It can transmit an audio signal from say a mike, but for an electric guitar the signal is electric not audio. The pickups and strings are more like electrical generators than microphones. An electric guitar signal is not audio until it is processed through an Amp. B)

do electric guitars have to be PAT tested?

Or just their amps?

It was (is?) very common for groups on the road to suffer regular electric shocks from their instruments due to either incorrect wiring or the wear and tear on the equipment from lots of travelling and manhandling causing shortcircuits and faulty earth connections.

As well as guitarists suffering, I know of a singer who got an electric shock on her lips from a microphone that had its earth connection direct to live mains.

All electrical equipment should be tested for safety. Travelling equipment equipment should be tested on a regular basis. Electrical equipment in which the body may contact metal parts (as in electric musical instruments and microphones) should be tested each time they are set up.

Just because these thing operate from low voltage power supplies, that doesn't mean that faults cannot occur resulting in the instrument being at mains live potential.

I stand corrected. I would have expected an amp to blow if it had mains power through it.

The problems I referred to were due to mains live being connected to what should have been earth through carelessness and mishandling of equipment. This is, apparently, quite common.

Perhaps some of the weird gyrations that is supposed to be dancing is caused by this :)
