-pops- Posted September 19, 2004 Report Share Posted September 19, 2004 Again, I know I'm an old misery and this is all very nice but, it's utterly pointless.It is yet another example where the computer is treated as an end in itself rather than as a tool to get things done. The amount of time I spend admiring the icons on my desktop (or anywhere else, for that matter) is zero. I use the icon for the purpose intended - to get me to the program I want to use. djohn Posted September 19, 2004 Report Share Posted September 19, 2004 I partly agree with -pops-, I'm an old misery! :D I do like to see colour and style though not only on my PC but in everything else I have. The function comes first every time but all other things being equal, style will be the deciding factor. It can be a pain at times, my workstation is in the lounge so not only did it have to be functional and suitable for my needs as -pops- will understand but also blend in with other furniture and fittings.After many days of looking for a unit at different stores I finally settled on a small workstation from Staples, brought it home assembled it and didn't like it so back it went. This happened two more times until we found one that was functional - stylish and most important of all, my wife liked it enough to have it in the lounge. :lol: Funny thing was, the first two were just over the £100 mark, the one I finally chose was only £49.99 so I saved a few bob and once more came back into -pops- line of thinking! :P Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Am I extra lucky in having my own "den" or office where I can hide my stuff away?My current machines are housed in black Antec Sonata cases, not so much for their style but for the quiet PSU and the convenient soundproofing kit that Quiet PC do for this case. My monitors are black CRTs not particularly to match but because, with my son, we got a quantity discount for buying 20 of them.I have to say that the do look quite stylish but style is way down the list below function as far as I'm concerned. :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Not even mentioning the white coats...Today the computer is a central and significant part in our culture.Customising the Windows desktop can enhance ones connectivity with their tool.But is the computer considered a tools these days? Maybe it's more of a life style? Using different Icons, wallpapers, themes, effects only adds to the pleasure of computing. Granted if your using your computer for mission critical work the last thing you want is "pretty icons".
