Called on a very young friend of mine this evening to help out with his PC. Over the months we have managed to enliven his very old Packard Bell. He was given an old duff PC by his school for spares. At present he has only got a 1GB HDD installed but we discovered a 4.5 GB IBM drive in the other PC. Tried to install it in place of his CD, just to check it out because the Main ribbon cable only had one connector, but it wasn't recognized. Then did a swap for his present HDD and it was recognized as a Quantum Fireball. However it wouldn't go any further other that to say there was a missing kernel file. We intended only to install it as a secondary and propose to reformat it anyway.

Now my question is I have a spare ribbon cable with the 1 plus 2 connectors. Need recommendations as to which connector to plug into which HDD. Any other suggestions would be most welcome. He's running 98SE.

Sort of. The spare cable I have is an 80 way cable, should be OK for an older system? The middle connector is much closer to one end than the other. I seem to remember that there is a preference as to which one to use for the master and which for the slave?
