Can't update windows- Need help with settings

Recommended Posts

Heey there,

My computer's been pretty good, just one problem. I have been unable to update my windows for weeks, and weeks. But, I have the little icon on my bottom toolbar telling me it's ready. When I try to update it, it says I need to fix my settings to allow it, I kept trying over & over, reload and I get the same darn message.

Right now, that icon on my tool bar is - hmm.. frozen I would say, I click it nothing happens (when I run mouse over it, it says "downloading updates 33%", it NEVER says anything else- just 33%. I can't figure out why my settings are not letting me update, could someone tell me hw my settings hould be set, or anything else I need to do? Thanks guys!

I'm having the same problem with a friend's laptop I'm working on. It didn't have Windows Update on it at all, or at least it seemed so. I always got an error stating that there was some error that prevented the page from loading (at the online Update page). I got an email that told me to register a list of dll files, followed by my stopping the Windows Update and Background Intelligent Update Service which a few other configurations, yet I cannot stop the services. I won't get a response until Monday, but I was hoping I could find somebody else having the same problem with their Windows XP Pro. I managed to get the updater installed, but it only tried to update (upto 33%) once, and it stalled there. I went to the update page again and it freezes Explorer now, yet none of their help base tips work. Any ideas on what's going on?
