Floppy Virus in 2004

"So, it's weird finding a virus which replicates by using floppy disks and CD-ROMs. This is exacly how the Bacros virus replicates. Bacros was already found a month ago but we've started receiving more questions on it lately. This virus will copy itself to all floppies it sees. It also attempts to burn itself to CD-R discs (complete with an AUTORUN file, which will run the virus when the CD-R is inserted to another machine)."

Floppies were THE method of distributing viruses in the earlier days of computing (when the Internet was part of a global defence system, floppies were the size of dinner plates and CDs were but a twinkle in the eyes of the development engineers at Phillips).

This seems unknown or to have been forgotten nowadays and, if one is of a mind to create and propagate malware, it is a good way to do it.

In my time I have known several viruses to have been sent via floppy discs - including some commercial ones. These would be considered negligible risk now but, at that time, they had a devastating effect on the computers they infected.
