pwp
this may be a daft question.can you use the usb conection to join two computers for data transfer.i just want to move the data from my old computer to my new one.tia
-pops-
That isn't the purpose of USB and I'm doubtful that it can be done easily, or at all.If your new computer is loaded with WXP, check the Files and Systems Transfer Wizard. This will do what you want.

Sir Radfordin
Link you can buy a 'special' cable that will allow you to do this but it is likely to be fairly expensive. Only place I've any memory of seeing one was Maplins
djohn
Yes, you can buy USB cables for PC to PC data transfer. have a look here for example. Here and at Dabs Here
-pops-
I stand corrected although I wouldn't use one of those myself.

pwp
thanks for the links it would seem to be an expensive solution to a short termproblem. thanks again guess i'll have to burn a few discs. :D
expertec
If you burn to CD-R, the files will be read-only when you copy them back to the hard drive.
pwp
If you burn to CD-R, the files will be read-only when you copy them back to the hard drive.i.m not really sure if that will be aproblem or not.?
expertec
It will be, you need to unset the read-only attribute after you copy them to the hard drive.
bvw
I've found the easiest way to transfer files from an old PC to a new PC, without networking etc, is to remove the old hard drive and put it in my external enclosure.....then just connect via USB2 to the new PC.External enclosures are worth their weight in gold :D
-pops-
External enclosures are worth their weight in gold :DI'd agree with that. Use them all the time.I'm also a fairly recent user of a pen drive - perfect for swapping small (and not so small) amounts of data between machines.
