As my old music center died it went down the tip, I have now purchased a record deck with a pre-amp fitted.

I hooked it up to my computer and it played allright.

What I need to know is if I buy a pair of speakers and plug them in to the record deck will they work or do I need an amplifier unit.

A pre amp is there to do what it says, that is to pre amplify the sound before inputting into the main amplifier. I would expect you to need an amplifier. Take a list of the components to a local specialist shop and get their advice.

The pre-amp will give a 1V p/p output signal. This is a standard level for "line in" type inputs.

If you buy the computer type powered speakers (the ones with their own power supply) they should work with a 1V signal as their input.

Conventional Hi-Fi type speakers will not work on this setup without a power amplifier.
