SpiritualGorila Posted December 26, 2004 Report Share Posted December 26, 2004 I got a Cyberhome DVD burner for christmas, and I didnt know anything about installing them, but i tried anyway before i begged someone for a free installation. I thought I had it figured out. Took the IDE wire thing that came from my top drive ( im not sure if im saying this right, so please correct me if im a dumbass) and put that into the back of the burner, and the power thing that was connected to the cords from the top drive. The burner also came with an audio cord, and i dont know what to do with that one. I just plugged it into something that looked right enough. So then i turn the computer on, and i log into XP and it freezes shortly after starting windows. I didnt know what that the problem was. I undid what i did with the burner and turned it on and it works fine. Could it be beause the top drive isnt set to slave? no ideaPS Dell computers towers make it impossible to screw the screws into the sides. You cant get all the sides off. Anyone have a 2400 with the metal shell thing and know how to get the other side off? or any other pieces off that make it hard to do? its a pain in the ass. Thanks guys, any help whatsoever is greatly appreciated.and also i didnt just do this once, i did it a bunch of times and it kept freezing (takin the audio cord out, in etc) still didnt work. scuzzman Posted December 27, 2004 Report Share Posted December 27, 2004 I have a Dimension 2400 - only one side comes off.As for the problem, it's not a master/slave problem, b/c then your computer wouldn't boot. SpiritualGorila Posted December 27, 2004 Author Report Share Posted December 27, 2004 Maybe this is the problem: my top drive is cd rom only, and im going to buy a dvd rom probably this week, but i wanted to install the dvd burner because i had it. And the ide cable is FIRST connected to the CD ROM top drive, and the other connector on the same cord is connected to the DVD burner. I tried just plugging everything in while the computer was on, and the drive opens and shuts and stuff, but XP doesnt seem to recognize it. should i try restarting it now?ps... Where is the audio cable supposed to go? Cyberhome has some pretty s***ty instructions....and thanks for all your help thus far! im close... i can feel it! trackrat Posted December 27, 2004 Report Share Posted December 27, 2004 First of you do not need the audio cable.If you leave the CDROM connected to the top of the IDE cable that will be set as master,So connect your DVD to the middle connector and make sure it is set as slave ( this is done by moving the little plastic clip to slave ). And will it be still be slave if i get a DVD rom drive?Anyone know how to take a drive out of the 2400??? ?You cant get in there at all to unscrew the screws. Need some friggin space. trackrat Posted December 27, 2004 Report Share Posted December 27, 2004 On the back of the drive there is a row of double pins with a plastic clip on two of them, some where it should have letters stamped on it ( M S CS )M is master - S is slave - CS is cable select.If their are no letters stamped above these pins have a look at the S*****y documentation.Yes you can still keep it as a slave and set your new DVD rom as master, that is when you figure out how to get the CDrom out :P Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They have little screw like things holding the frame together, but i dont see anything to unscrew them with. maybe on the inside? Boris Posted December 27, 2004 Report Share Posted December 27, 2004 The drive rails may actually be made of metal and silver as well as green plastic ?The rails are screwed to the actual optical drive - which then slots in from the front.If you can remove the front fascia, you may be able to see the ends of the rails ? If you can ............ - either press them inward or outward (I can't remember which way !) to release the drive to enable it to slide out toward the front of the case ??? SpiritualGorila Posted December 28, 2004 Author Report Share Posted December 28, 2004 I think my DVd burner drive just may be messed up, because i took the top IDE port thing from my top drive and put it in the dvd burner and turned on the computer and it said that "Drive 0 is missing" and it just didnt recognize it. The top drive i have was set to cable select for some reason and i just couldnt see it, so i just switched the dvd burner to cable select, and presto, it works. Thanks everyone for all your help...But one more query! Anyone know how to get the top drive out of a dell computer????? cuz i cant unscrew the screws at all..... wondering if theres a simpler way....
