Do You Read The EULA

Not sure where to put this thread as is applies to quite a few topics.

Here goes:

How many of us actually read the licence agreement that we have to agree to when installing software?

In another post there is a reference to a quite reputable sounding piece of software which installs something you may prefer not to have on your machine. OK, you have to positively agree to it but then, there is lots of other stuff that may be hidden away in other programs and the only reference to the extras you are installing is hidden away on page 99 of a very small print EULA.

We are all probably aware of the pitfalls in installing Kazaa and other P2P programs but, be very aware that lots of other programs install things that, at the very least "phone home" at worst, stuff your machine with perhaps hundreds of things that can do untold damage. Even such workhorse programs like Internet Explorer installs a small utility (Alexa) which most of the antispy software classes as undesirable.

My suggestion whenever installing software from any source - including Microsoft - is to check on a search engine (Google?) to see if anything untoward has been detected with it. Read the small print of the EULA if the software is even slightly unusual/uncommon. Ask on Forums such as this one if anyone has any experience of the software you intend to load. Do a thorough malware scan after installation although, by that time, it may be too late as you will have already agreed to everything in the program being installed.

Good point -pops-. I remember I had to agree to the EULA when installing my Microsoft keyboard drivers! The one I nearly missed though was with my new Logitech mouse, well, I did miss it first time round but soon un-installed it when I saw that I had agreed to Backweb being installed on my PC for the rodent to phone home automatically for driver updates and to inform me of other new products by Logitech! :(

I never do... :o

But then again I know what a product does before I even go near it.

You may know what a product does but do you know in every case what else it may install in addition to that which you know about?
