andsome
In the past if I have ever needed a system file check, I have always typed 'sfc /scannow', and inserted my Windows XPSP1 CD. If I ever need to do such a check again, should I do the same, or should I insert the CD that I made from the SP2 download from this site? djohn
Morning andsome :)If it is the slipstream CD that you made from Powerless's guide then yes' use that one.
nellie2
That's a good question, so how do you do sfc if you don't have a slipstreamed CD? Will the checker look in the SP2 installation folder?
andsome
The CD that I have, was burned from the download of SP2 that was offered on WF just before the official public launch. I wondered whether or not trying to use the original CD with the original folders could cause problems. I don't need to do this at present, but I just wondered what the correct procedure would be for anyone in the future.
djohn
Not sure about that one nel. Powerless will know for certain but yes, I think it would look to the SP2 folder.
trackrat
Just out of interest I ran sfc /scannow and it asked for my XP CD, not the SP2 or a slipstreamed CD.
nellie2
So I wonder if a System File Check would mess up an updated installation then?? That is something to ponder on
trackrat
Nellie my installation is fully up to date and it caused no problems.
andsome
Nellie my installation is fully up to date and it caused no problems. As a matter of interest, have you visited Windows Update since?
spikeychris
As has been said above it depends on how SPII was installed. There is quite a few permutations and I think I have come across them all by now. If you were to run SFC and Windows asked for the SPII disk you will find that you might have to change the source to "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386"
trackrat
Yes Andsome I have just visited the update site and there are no priority updates that I have not allready installed .
andsome
This is puzzling. I just set up to run sfc out of curiosity and it asked for Windows XP CD. I did not go any further, I just stopped it. I personally installed SP" as I said from the link on this site, before the official release. spikeychris
This is because you didn't slipstream the service pack.
andsome
I wouldn't even know what a slipstream is to tell you the truth. I still don't know what would happen if I ran scf with the XP disc, as compared with running it with the SP 2 disc.
spikeychris
It would replace any updated files with the original.
andsome
It would replace any updated files with the original.Thanks. So would it be in order to run sfc with the SP2 disc, or should you run it with the XP disc then reinstall SP2?
trackrat
I ran it with the XP CD and did not have to replace any SP2 files.
andsome
I ran it with the XP CD and did not have to replace any SP2 files. It looks very much then as though we just use the system disc should we need sfc
spikeychris
C:\i386 contains your install files. SP2 will be found under..... C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386The updated files are in Windows\ServicepackFiles. The .inf files tell SFC to go there first.Do you have 2 CD drives? If so burn that folder CD; then with go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup.In the right pane, change the value of ServicePackSourcePath accordingly; using the CD drive letter different from the original CD in 'SourcePath'. Then if files are needed you can have one CD in each drive.
