ISDN Devices

My brother in law runs W98. He can access the internet and send and receive e-mails OK, and the computer seems to be behaving OK, except for a window which opens up just before the booting up is complete. The wording in the window is,

No ISDN devices were found. Please install an ISDN device and run the configuration wizard again.

If he closes the window the boot up completes and the computer gives all appearances of running normally. Any ides anyone please?

Has this ever been a network computer? You don't say what type of modem you are using. Have a check in your Control Panel | Modems and remove any obsolete hardware.

Also check your Device manager in Systems to remove any ISDN adapter installed.

If you have an internal ISDN adapter or an old network card fitted that you aren't using any more, you may have to get your screwdriver out and remove it to prevent it from attempting to re-install on re-boot

He bought it second hand several years ago, and this message only started recently. I wouldn't like to ask him to remove case, he knows even less than I do about the innards of a computer. I will suggest that he look in the control panel though. THANKS

Hi

You don't say weather he has an ISDN line or not, but as he brought the PC second hand it may well have an ISDN card left in it, if it does it is probably the "Capi " Control software that has got currupted or somthing, and it is saying that it can't find any ISDN devices. This is what happened to mine the other day when i installed a bluetooth dongle, it messed up the capi control, if he does not have a ISDN line, then he should look inside the mahine for a ISDN card and remove it, then he should look in add remove programs for the Capi Control software or something similar and uninstall it.

If he does have a ISDN card in the machine and a ISDN line then he should download the latest Capi software from here.

If he has nothaing at all to do with ISDN, then i have no clue why he is getting this message.

Wish him luck

Tony

If he's not confident about taking the side of the case off andsome, pop round and do it for him. Take a photo of the inside toward the rear where the cards are, upload it here and one of the guys will tell you if it is an ISDN, which one it is, and how to remove it. :)

As an addition to Djohn's suggestion, take a picture of the back where the PCI peripherals plug in as well. This would help in locating anything connected with telephony :)

Many thanks for all the replies. I will have a chat on the phone with him this morning. there could be an ISDN card, ( I don't even know what that is). He uses a dial up modem on the normal BT line for access. As I said this message only started a few weeks ago.

Had a long session on the phone this morning with him. There is only one modem shown, and that is the one that is in use. Nothing showing in Network. Nothing in Add/Remove that shouldn't be there.

It will be a week or two before we visit him again to take photo's. As the computer is running normally once he closes that window, is he likely to do any harm in carrying on using it as normal?

I would doubt it. I had a boot up message on a machine telling me that "The IR detector wasn't detected" for months before it gave up and didn't bother me any longer. No idea what it was - there was never an IR detector on the machine and there was no clue anywhere I could find that it was related to. Your friend's ISDN message may go away in the same fashion :)
